Reol has re-entered an era of sound, a familiar one to most fans. The new EP called Bunmei EP can now be previewed through a short clip, giving us a good hint of what we can expect. From the material out so far—including the music video Utena—it offers an exquisite and colorful electronic sound that can be described with the term “Desktop Music”, or “DTM” for short. It is a Japanese term that encompasses music dominantly and that typically utilizes synthesizers. In English, we more or less just call it “Computer music”.
For the EP preview, Reol took help from her good friend Okiku to produce it. Find the EP in stores on March 20.
Ever since Reol returned to being a solo act, we thought things were going towards a more rock direction since we saw a lot of melancholic rock songs at the beginning. This was right after the disbandment of the three-man unit “REOL”, so we can only assume Reol wasn’t in a happy mood which resulted in those songs. In our interview with Reol, she stated:
When I feel down, that’s usually when I get into the mood of making music.
However, as Reol’s music started to mature, the electronic influences started coming back. This can partially be credited to her sidekick Giga who is responsible for a lot of the punchy sound you hear in Reol’s music, including the upcoming Bunmei EP where he arranged all four songs, composed three of them. Giga was also the one who first introduced Reol to DTM and has been a big influence on her sound of choice.
My approach in music changed when I met Giga. I was unaware of the so-called “Desktop Music” genre at the time. He introduced me to a lot of it and gave me recommendations.
If you haven’t yet listened to the song Utena off the upcoming EP, make sure to do so to get an even better idea of what you can expect.
