Today, on September 9, SLOTHREAT released their second full-length album APARADOXIA, six years after their first album. The 10-track record includes new “APARADOXIA Version” takes on three previously released songs.
APARADOXIA arrives six years after SLOTHREAT’s debut album THEMIS, which we covered back in 2020, though the band has kept busy with other releases in between. The new album offers a mix of modern elements, keeping a sharp and sophisticated metalcore sound throughout, but destructive when it wants to be.
The compositions are slick and intricate—especially the guitar riffs—and the arrangement and mixing are richly detailed. The physical version even includes instrumental tracks, where those details really come through. Based on the album credits, guitarist Katsuya is the primary force behind both the compositions and the mixing, which goes a long way toward explaining this level of polish, as he’s a well-respected engineer within the Japanese rock scene.
Existing fans of SLOTHREAT will also find themselves on familiar ground with a few of the tracks on the new 10-track album. “Rebels”, “Harmonize”, and “Luminous Cave” have all previously appeared on singles, and each returns here with the “APARADOXIA Version” treatment, letting you experience them in a new light. This sure is a welcome move, since these happen to be some of my favorite songs from the band.
Fellow musician Fumiya even praised the album as a whole, calling it “incredibly cool” and “impressively crafted”. You may know Fumiya as the drummer of Unlucky Morpheus and the superband Alternation Of Generations, and previously of GALNERYUS and nekomanju.
SLOTHREAT is a band you should definitely keep an eye on, and we’re not just saying it. They’re a band we chose to invite to play at JROCK NEWS’ very first concert event, “PULSE vol.1”, last year.
