EMNW is a two-vocalist rock duo comprised of Emma and Menu. Merging a compilation of genres together, including nu metal, punk, hip-hop, and more, EMNW presents a fresh sound in rock music. Their rapid rise to success has afforded them a multitude of opportunities, including working with influential music figures both in and outside of Japan, all the while sharing their unique blend of music worldwide.

EMNW has recently released their major debut single, LOVING TO GET US BY. The new single begins a new chapter for EMNW. We had the opportunity to speak with EMNW on a variety of topics, covering their journey to their major debut single, including influences, their first self-titled album, performing overseas, and more.

Thanks for speaking to JROCK NEWS! Emma and Menu, would you please introduce yourselves to our readers?

Emma: I’m Emma! I’ve loved music and expressing myself ever since I was little, and my goal is to become a crossover artist who isn’t bound by any particular genre.

Menu: I’m Menu! I want to express the things that I personally find “interesting”, without limiting myself to any particular genre.

For those new to EMNW, how would you describe your music?

Emma: We play mixture rock. “Mixture rock” is a term mainly used in Japan, but in English, I think our music is closer to nu metal or rap metal. Our strength is a sound where different elements such as punk, ska, hip-hop, and loud rock intersect, and we’re constantly pursuing music that only we can create.

Where did the idea to start EMNW come from?

Emma: At first, we were each pursuing music separately, but EMNW began around March 2024 from an idea by our producer, Kuboty, “I want to do rock with two girls”. I already knew Kuboty, so when he reached out to me, I decided to join. After that, we started looking for a partner to work with, and Menu joined us after going through an audition.

Menu: I joined EMNW after auditioning. I had originally been pursuing music on my own, but after posting a cover of [the band] Creepy Nuts on social media, I was invited to audition, which eventually led me here. We started with the idea of “let’s have two female MCs do something interesting”, so I felt there were so many possibilities from the very beginning, and I’ve been excited ever since.

The vocals in your music are very playful. Are there any vocalists in particular that have influenced your style?

Menu: As EMNW, we’ve been heavily influenced by artists with roots in mixture and rap rock, such as RIZE, The BONEZ, Dragon Ash, YAMAARASHI, Limp Bizkit, and Beastie Boys. We’ve also been strongly influenced by Japan’s mixture scene, as well as nu metal and hip-hop from overseas. We want to take those different genres and cultures, blend them together in our own way, and turn them into music that only EMNW can create.

You released your first album, EMNW, back in March. What was it like creating the album?

Emma: First of all, one of our themes was to create a work that could sum up EMNW over the past one to two years, centered around the nine singles we had released up until then. At the same time, there would be people discovering EMNW for the first time through this album, so we wanted to create “a culmination of everything we’ve done, while also serving as an entry point into EMNW”. So many people were involved in the production, but one of the biggest things for us with the re-recordings was replacing the programmed drums with live drums. We had Gaku Taura from Crystal Lake and Tatsuya Amano from Crossfaith participate, and we also had scratches by BOTS, the DJ from Dragon Ash. It really became an incredibly special and luxurious album. I feel that we were able to bring to life a world that we couldn’t have created on our own, with the help and support of so many people.

Was there anything you wanted to focus on in particular when making the album EMNW?

Menu: We were very conscious of putting “all of the EMNW we have right now” into it. EMNW has aggressive songs, but we also have pop songs and playful songs, so I think it’s an album where, as you listen through it, you can really get a sense of, “Oh, so this is the kind of band EMNW is!”.

What was it like working with Sam Matlock and Charlie Russell for the single LOVING TO GET US BY?

Emma: Honestly, it was so much fun. The song has the kind of vibe you’d get at a house party, so the recording itself also had a really fun, party-like atmosphere. Both of them have such good vibes, and I think that atmosphere helped us put even more energy and emotion into the song.

You also got to work with the band ORANGE RANGE on the song CURRY TABETAI feat. Soy Sauce. What was it like collaborating with ORANGE RANGE?

Menu: For me, ORANGE RANGE’s music has always been a part of everyday life. They’re an artist I’ve been listening to since I was a kid. So being able to create a song together with them made me incredibly happy! CURRY TABETAI itself is such a playful song, and I think mixing it with ORANGE RANGE’s music created an even more interesting chemical reaction. It was also an incredibly inspiring and valuable experience for us.

Outside of releasing music, you’ve also had the opportunity to perform overseas in the UK and at Hammersonic Festival 2026 in Jakarta. How were your experiences performing overseas?

Emma: We received a much warmer response than I had imagined. I realized that even when language and culture are different, there are so many moments when you can connect with people through music, and that made me really happy. Experiencing live performances overseas made me want to bring our music to even more places, and it also made me want to see even bigger horizons than before.

What are your favorite songs to perform live?

Menu: Recently, I especially love LOVING TO GET US BY! It gets the crowd really excited when we play it live, and we also have so much fun performing it ourselves. It has a house-party kind of atmosphere, so when we play it live, I’d love for everyone in the audience to just let themselves go and enjoy the music without thinking too much about the details!

How does it feel that your music is reaching people overseas and being recognized worldwide?

Emma: We’re really happy about it. We want to keep bringing our music to more and more people, and we’d love to perform in all kinds of places around the world.

What does the future hold for EMNW?

Menu: We want to go overseas and play even more shows, not just in Japan! After performing in the UK and Jakarta, I really felt that music has no borders, so I want to keep going to places we haven’t visited yet. In particular, I definitely want to go to the US someday. Ultimately, I want to perform in all kinds of places around the world, and someday I’d love to stand on the Coachella stage!
