The all-new six-piece band Mawarimichi (まわりみち) debuted their first single, Yohaku (余白), on August 21. Yohaku comes with a music video showcasing simple but effective imagery to match the sentimental musical atmosphere.
Back in July, we covered the singer-songwriter ZURI and his unique style of musical expression. Now ZURI is back, but this time as part of the six-piece band Mawarimichi. Much like his solo work, ZURI handles production and composition while acting as the drummer in the band. Joining ZURI are lead and rhythm guitarists Zeng Enjia (曾恩加) and Saro, respectively, along with pianist Yuzzu and bassist Jun. Their first single, Yohaku, features ZURI on vocals, but in future tracks vocals will be taken over by Hana.
Before Yohaku was released, Mawarimichi’s socials were full of messages from each member. Despite a difference in phrasing, the intention and love of music in each member’s statement are clear. Each member expresses a heartfelt desire to convey emotions that can’t be felt or experienced through words. Mawarimichi chooses to express these complex emotions by blending multiple genres, including but not limited to Jrock, math rock, and jazz. While drawing influences from artists such as Yorushika and Uchu Nekoko, Mawarimichi operates within their own realm, creating an enchanting world through the power of music.
Yohaku‘s shimmering guitars and elegant piano nurture a heartfelt soundscape. The bold bass and drums add that all-essential Jrock groove, bringing power to the gentle arrangement. Furthermore, ZURI’s catchy vocal melodies that flow through the track expand the passion-filled musical concept. Although missing Hana on vocals, Yohaku showcases Mawarimichi’s devotion to conceptualizing emotion-filled worlds through music. Despite Hana’s absence, the debut single is so masterfully crafted that awaiting Hana’s arrival in future tracks is going to be filled with uncontrollable anticipation.
Similarly to ZURI’s solo work, Mawarimichi focuses on music first and visuals second. Yohaku‘s accompanying music video only supports the vivid world already created by the sentimental music. The music video displays hands longing for affection but only momentarily embracing the warmth of the other. In addition to the drawn pictures taking over the music video, there are real-life photographs taken by Taizo, bassist of Maverick Mom, adding to the heartfelt music by directing attention to the beauty in everyday life.
