POLKADOT STINGRAY released a jazzy new song titled Ghost Dive on September 20 in collaboration with the music project, Pokémon Music Collective.
Alongside the release of the song Ghost Dive, the band has revealed a short animated music video focusing on five ghost Pokémon. The Pokémon consists of Gengar, Drifloon, Mimikyu, Dreepy, and Chandelure, who are up to all sorts of wickedness.
The song also integrates the eery but iconic 8-bit Lavender Town theme, originally from the Gameboy handheld game Pokémon Red and Blue. The band uses this sample in an unpredictable way to create what becomes primarily an upbeat, jazzy song.
The first-person animated short sees the main character suddenly wake up in their ghost Pokémon-themed bedroom. Walking to the window and picking up a pair of binoculars, the character sees Drifloon and Dreepy floating about. The main character then leaves the house, enters the scary and eerie forest nearby looking for these Pokémon, and gets more than they bargained for.
The song has been released as part of Pokémon Music Collective’s music project, sharing its name with the release. Record label Universal Music Japan’s website states:
Pokémon Music Collective is a music project based on the concept of ‘building from sounds used in the Pocket Monsters game series to bring new music into the world’. The idea is to gather artists across a range of genres and release under said project name with that concept in mind.
The band appears on the compilation EP with other artists tasked with creating Pokémon-focused songs. This includes solo artist imase, k-pop group ENHYPHEN, solo artist Micheal Kaneko, and finally, on one song together, rappers Matt Cab, BBY NABE, and Charlu.
