On February 22, LUNA SEA announced that their drummer Yamada Shinya (山田真矢) sadly passed away on February 17 from Stage 4 colorectal cancer, which had spread to his brain.
In 2020, Shinya was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer, and in September 2025, it was revealed that he had developed a brain tumor. During this time, it left him unable to drum, and at one point, barely able to stand.
Since his initial diagnosis, LUNA SEA impressively released two self-cover albums of their prolific MOTHER and STYLE, and continued to tour throughout that period.
In November 2025, the band held the two-day “LUNATIC FEST. 2025”, with Junji (SIAM SHADE) filling in for Shinya—a drummer who Shinya himself mentored. Despite Shinya being initially hospitalized, he made a guest appearance at the event.

An outpouring of love has been expressed on social media from the people that were graced by his presence and those who looked up to him. JROCK NEWS send our deepest condolences to LUNA SEA and their fans.
The band shared a version of their Japanese announcement in English which can be read below:
In memory of Shinya
To our fans and the global community,
It is with a heavy heart and profound grief that we announce the passing of Shinya, the eternal heartbeat and drummer of LUNA SEA. He peacefully departed his life at 6:16 PM on February 17, 2026.
Since 2020, Shinya had been courageously fighting Stage 4 colorectal cancer and a brain tumor discovered last year. Through seven surgeries and relentless treatment, he continued to battle with a strength that inspired us all. Though he has now drawn the curtain on his 56 years of life, his journey was defined by a resilience that transcended his illness.
Until the very end, Shinya remained committed to his rehabilitation, driven by his will to play the drums at our performance in March. His sudden departure has left a void that words cannot fill.
Shinya believed more strongly than anyone that “the five of us will return to stage once more.” Even in the face of his greatest trials, his faith never wavered. His unyielding spirit and his radiant, sun-like smile had been a source of hope for the band members and our entire staff.
The soulful rhythms he cast for over 35 years and his boundless devotion will resonate forever within the legacy of LUNA SEA. His rhythm will never fade away.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the fans who have supported Shinya with such warmth and love.
In accordance with the wishes of his family, a private funeral has been held with close relatives. We plan to create an opportunity in the near future for fans to gather and offer their final farewells. Details will be shared once they are finalized.
We ask that you join us in offering your prayers, so that Shinya’s soul may rest in eternal peace.
RYUICHI, SUGIZO, INORAN, J / LUNA SEA
Shinya joined LUNA SEA in 1989, three years after the band formed, and became a key part of their journey ever since. As a drummer, he was inspired by Yoshiki of X JAPAN, and in turn influenced other drummers like Shinya from DIR EN GREY, and Junji from SIAM SHADE, and more. Early in Junji’s career, Shinya even took him under his wing, having him work as his roadie until Junji became a professional musician. It’s no exaggeration to call Junji and Shinya a master-and-disciple pair.
As you can imagine, Shinya was deeply respected across the Japanese rock scene, trusted as a support musician for notable artists such as Toshl (X JAPAN), GACKT, MIYAVI, and many more. He married former Morning Musume idol Ishiguro Aya in 2000—who also admired Shinya as a fan—and is survived by her and their three children.
From our perspective as fans, Shinya always felt like the most relatable and down-to-earth member of the band: a family man who wasn’t afraid to be funny. His appearances on variety shows even embraced playful nicknames like “Shady Promoter” (悪徳プロモーター) and “Buu-chan” (Piggy, ブーちゃん), given to him by the comedic duo Downtown on their show “HEY! HEY! HEY!”.
Shinya’s warmth, talent, and humor has no doubt left a lasting void for fans and fellow musicians alike, but his legacy lives on in everyone he inspired. Thank you, Shinya, for your music and spirit.
