Today marks the release of HANABIE.’s EP, Bucchigiri Tokyo (ぶっちぎり東京), and we’ve had the opportunity to dive deep into its tracks ahead of its official launch. Our first impression was how the EP offers a more refined and deliberate sound while retaining the band’s “Harajuku core” identity that fans know and love. This impression remains consistent even after giving the album a closer listen!

Before the full release, we were already familiar with two of the tracks released as singles, such as the energetic OTAKU Lovely Densetsu and the aggressive Metamorphose. These songs blend seamlessly with the new material, which includes the title track Bucchigiri Tokyo, along with GAMBLER, Ito Okashi My Type, and Bonus Guilty Time. Although, the last track, Bonus Guilty Time stands out more as an atmospheric track that reflects the band’s identity and captures elements of Japanese subculture—filling it with quirky monologues that give it a playful twist.

Bucchigiri Tokyo is definitely a track we’d love to experience live. Its high pace, bold theme, and dynamic screams make it an exciting opener for the EP, setting an energetic and fierce tone that is maintained till the end.

While we didn’t do the math, it also felt like there was an increased use of clean vocals provided by guitarist Matsuri, which opened up more opportunities for composition and arrangement within the band’s sound. This shift in vocal style brings a greater variety to the tracks, moving beyond the reliance on heavy screams alone, or the contrast between vocalist Yukina’s kawaii image and her aggressive screams.

Overall, Bucchigiri Tokyo marks a noticeable yet subtle step toward maturity in HANABIE.’s sound. While the shift isn’t drastic, this evolution gives the music a greater sense of cohesion while still delivering the playful, high-energy vibe that has made HANABIE. so beloved.
