During an announcement at the online and in-person event “DigiFes 2021” on August 1, fans were introduced to a new Digimon movie titled “02“. And as the numbers imply, the movie will revolve around the characters from the second generation of Digimon, Digimon Adventure 02. However, in the promotional material, we are also presented with a mysterious character who seems to be witnessing the birth of one of the first Digimon!
So, what can audiences expect from 02? Unfortunately, since the production is still in its early stages, only a handful of information is available. The release date is still to follow, but here’s what we know so far.
Firstly, the production team will comprise director Taguchi Tomohisa and scriptwriter Akatsuki Yamatoya. Both were in charge of the last Digimon movie: Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna.
Secondly, a 39-second teaser trailer with English subtitles is available to view on YouTube. Fittingly, it is narrated by the protagonist of Digimon Adventure 02, Daisuke Motomiya, the grown-up version. Most nostalgic is the background music playing which is of the opening theme song of Digimon Adventure 02, Target ~Akai Shougeki~ (ターゲット〜赤い衝撃〜) by Wada Koji!
Below is the movie poster that contains two exciting taglines. The one on the right reads: “Now, the door to an adventure opens”, while the left reads: “I’m the first person to ever partner with a Digimon”.

Lastly, regarding the concept and motivation for this movie, producer Yosuke Kinoshita comments:
The main theme of this movie will be everyone from “02”! Daisuke and his friends have a different kind of appeal to Tai and his friends, so I really wanted to express that appeal this time. The characters I can confirm right now are not just Daisuke and his friends, but also a mysterious boy and his Digimon, and an interesting line of text… In the image is one of the ancestor Digimon that birthed the other Digimon, Kenji Watanabe drew it! What kind of meaning does it hold? We honestly just started, so we still have a long way ahead of us, but I hope you’ll look forward to it in anticipation!
