The South Korean visual kei band, DEAD BOY, unveiled the music video for their second single called “8” on September 30. The release further develops the band’s distinctive visual kei identity.
The music video for “8” shifts between two worlds: old-fashioned synth-pop and raging modern metal. As the retro chorus plays, the video evokes the look of the ’90s, with the image sharpening as the music takes a metal turn. The sharper image reveals the band unleashing its pent-up rage through the devilish metal arrangements. Then, suddenly, DEAD BOY returns to the blissful chorus, taking listeners back to the past.
Credited as director and editor, vocalist Yoel makes use of his videography skills to capture an arrangement of powerful scenes.
Despite only being their second single, DEAD BOY is carving out their own unique, immediately recognizable sound. The years of experience Yoel and guitarist Darae have gained through composing for idol groups are evident in the star-struck choruses. With twinkling synths, DEAD BOY takes you back in time. However, moment to moment the music can change vastly, with Yoel going from angelic synthesized vocals to suddenly unleashing his inner demons.
The next time you’re struggling to decide between listening to metal and synth pop, consider choosing both with “8” on major streaming services now.
