To our surprise, metalcore and djent band abstracts are back in action after announcing their disbandment in late 2022. Now four years later, we get the single FRAGMENT, after several months of vague teasing.
In terms of sound, FRAGMENTÂ is on the heavier side and seems to continue the “genre-bending” style abstracts showcased before their disbandment. Guitarist LIN’s guitar work stays mostly simple rhythm, but adds in pitch shifts and rhythm changes at the right moments to keep it interesting. Vocalist SATOKEN delivers aggressive screams that also shift into cleans. Bassist MIKI glues everything together and takes the spotlight during the calm section.
abstracts were once one of the rising djent bands in the Japanese metal scene, and guitarist LIN’s skills were even recognized by NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST, landing him a role as their guitarist for a time.
After entering their hiatus in 2019, the band made two sudden single releases two years later in 2021, but about a year later, vocalist SATOKEN announced their disbandment via an Instagram story. While there are no official sources for the disbandment, fans were able to capture the now-expired story.
Now in 2026, after several teasers around May on X (formerly Twitter)—since deleted—we finally see the band back together for the release of FRAGMENT on August 8.
As official information about the band is sparse, it isn’t fully clear which members are permanent. During the 2019 hiatus, founder and guitarist LIN was the sole member left, with vocalist SATOKEN and bassist MIKI departing. For the 2021 single New Breed, LIN and SATOKEN were the active members. Now all three are credited on FRAGMENT: LIN (guitar, programming), SATOKEN (vocals), and MIKI (bass, programming).
