On a chilly, drizzling Friday evening in San Francisco, a sold-out crowd wrapped around August Hall, eager for HANABIE.’s return. The show marked the penultimate stop of the band’s latest U.S. tour, an ambitious run nearly twice as long as their 2024 visit. The anticipation felt earned.

Support came from Spokane, Washington’s Enterprise Earth and Santa Barbara, California’s Nekrogoblikon. Enterprise Earth wasted no time, delivering a tight, bone-crunching set that primed the crowd. Nekrogoblikon followed, taking the stage to the Pokémon theme song. Their goblin-fronted chaos, complete with absurd antics and soaring vocals, blurred the line between parody and precision.

HANABIE. stormed the stage with their self-styled “Harajukucore,” a collision of metalcore ferocity and the colorful irreverence of Tokyo’s Harajuku culture. Opening with NEET GAME, the quartet launched into a relentless sprint. Razor-sharp riffs met lyrics that channel the anxieties of modern life. SUNRISE MISO-SOUP swerved into progressive territory, its insomnia theme giving way to weary relief at breakfast. Reiwa Matching-Sedai carved out a darker groove, critiquing the hollowness of app-driven relationships.

Visually, the band mirrored their sonic chaos. Dressed in bright, primary colors, they bounded across the stage with kinetic purpose. They skipped, pranced, and headbanged, yet never lost control. The energy never dipped for the hour-long set, a feat that made Yukina’s recent throat issues feel distant. Any lingering concerns from the Brooklyn Bowl cancellation vanished as soon as she stepped on stage. Her performance was explosive. Guttural growls cut cleanly through the mix, even as she jumped into the photo pit to high-five fans at the barricade mid-set.

Instrumentally, the band dialed in. Bassist Hettsu and guitarist Matsuri rampaged in sync, headbanging in lockstep as their hands flew across the fretboards. Matsuri’s tapping in Choujigen Galaxy drew attention. Drummer Chika, stationed behind a compact four-piece kit, delivered a thunderous backbone. Her blistering double bass kicks and sharp cymbal work filled the hall with authority.

The crowd responded in kind. A circle pit formed around a fan in an inflatable cow suit during TOUSOU, then surged into a wall of death just moments later. In ICONIC, a beach ball bounced its way onto the stage, only for Yukina to bump it back into the sea of hands, reinforcing the playful rapport between the band and audience.

For the main set finale Osaki ni Shitsurei Shimasu, Yukina, Hettsu, and Matsuri gathered around Chika’s drum riser. Chika unleashed a barrage of kicks and crashes. The moment peaked in chaos. Yukina wrung out one last scream from her lungs, and then she collapsed, one leg shot up. The lights cut.

The encore was brief but effective. Breakneck melocore anthem Today’s Good Day & So Epic from the major-label debut Reborn Superstar!, capped the night on a buoyant note. Grinding bass lines met a bright chorus. The crowd got one last singalong that left them with ear-to-ear smiles.

Proving just as striking was the audience. Fans spanned generations—teenagers shoulder to shoulder with parents and even grandparents—reflecting a diverse mix rarely seen so vividly at a metal show. In a scene often defined by subcultures, HANABIE. managed to unify everyone, if only for one rain-soaked night in San Francisco.
