MUCC’s BEST ALBUM Myojyo is set to drop on April 21, 2021. Now, we have a sneak peek at its contents including exclusive new recordings and their newest song, Myojyo—creating an exhibition of their fierce powerhouse abilities through the years of their multi-decade career.
Though the track list was revealed in February, there is still plenty of surprises on this album. For starters, four of the tracks were re-recorded last year while the world was in quarantine. Considering some of these songs were originally released over 15 years ago, it is thrilling to hear them rearranged with the band’s matured skills and style. Nukegara in particular sounds more mature and polished than the original.
Last but not least, we get to hear a snippet of the final version of their newest song, Myojyo. We were treated to a short and “rough” version of the song in December, but this is the first taste we have been offered of the finished product.
Each track on this album was chosen to honor departing drummer SATOchi, who developed them from sound to lyrics. The final song Myojyo is a collaborative piece, worked on by all four members. You can hear SATOchi’s touch in every song, with punchy and active rhythms, upbeat melodies, and optimistic lyrics.
Though most songs are upbeat, there are some wistful ballads as well. Mukashi kodomo datta hito e particularly packs a punch, both because of its tender nostalgia, and the sense of looking back at simpler times. It is an interesting choice for this album because it seems relevant to the turbulent times we live in, and a feeling we can all relate to.
Overall the preview gives us a bittersweet feeling, perhaps reflecting how MUCC feels about SATOchi’s departure.
That being said, it is not a solemn album. If anything it reminds us that MUCC is stronger than ever, shining fiercely with some of their most active songs. Hopefully, there will be many new hits ahead for this Jrock powerhouse.
