amazarashi is constantly on a quest to enlight people on social issues that surround the modern society. Bringing them to the surface by combining technology, emotions, and even philosophy. Their recent efforts awarded them four awards at this year’s Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity that took place in Singapore from September 25–27.
Thanks to amazarashi’s ambitious production work to create the astounding and technological concert back in November 2018, the Nippon Budokan live Rodoku ensou jikken kuukan, they were awarded under four categories.
- Gold award for “Digital Craft“
- Silver award for “Digital“
- Bronze award for “Mobile“
- Bronze award for “Design“.
All of these categories are well representative of the Nippon Budokan show which was a one-of-a-kind concert that we have never witnessed before.

The setting of the Rodoku ensou jikken kuukan concert brings us to a dystopic timeline, the digital age of 1984, where any controversial expression was silenced by censorship. The concept is inspired by the novelist and critic George Orwell who wrote the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, where the world has fallen victim to governmental corruption. With amazarashi’s touch, they created “The Dystopia Experience — A Rock Opera And The 10,000-mobile Resistance”.
Our mission was to alert their listeners to the dangers of word hypersensitivity on SNSs.
We gave them a glimpse of the future that this path led to.
We brought this dystopia to real life.
Following the theme of censorship, the band release censored music, censored music video, and the stage at the concert was even censored by a black cage. The only way for the people—the audience, the resistance—to fight back was to use their weapons at hand, their mobile phones. By installing an app, the resistance was able to “hack” the system utilizing their flashlights to synchronously create light patterns, capable of decensoring the content.

The animated lyrics videos were decensored with the help of the 10,000-mobile resistance, by creating light patterns using their mobile phones.
This movement allowed the audience to interact and participate in, creating a unique experience and to show how powerful rock can be. Being a Japanese rock band to receive multiple awards from Spikes Asia is very rare, this goes to show how far amazarashi has come with their genuine and unprecedented ideas.
