From their sold-out comeback performance at Shinkiba Studio Coast to releasing SINNERS-EP meant that lynch. were well and truly back. As 2017 came to an end, the band had one more release to send us off with and that was in the form of their most recent single, BLØOD THIRSTY CREATURE. The question is, does it do enough to change up the current formula?
Starting with the sound of a guitar lead being plugged in, BLØOD already gives off this raw and unhinged vibe and even more so as vocalist Hazuki screams in. This, alongside those dirty buzzing riffs they played around with in EVIDENCE, is accompanied by Asanao pummeling the drums into submission.
Everything is then distorted, harking back to near the start of AVANT GARDE, before continuing on from where it left off, taking no time at all to get to the chorus. It sounds like I’m sick, becuz luv u at one point with the long use of “whoa’s” and to an extent, EVOKE, in regards to its call-and-response sections.
The lyrics are in English too, as first line “This is do or die” expressing desperation that soon becomes existential with the chorus, “I can’t be someone and nobody can be me, inside this voice and this body”. All before turning the narrative on its head with an anguished Hazuki using “you” towards the listener.
BLØOD does get repetitive though and EVOKE is the same, as they have similar structures, however, both songs are able to increase the hype, especially mid-set. It is an aggressive and uplifting song with relatable lyrics. What makes this special though are those call-backs and how its illustrated as such.
CREATURE immediately grabs your attention with cowbells, overlapping whispers and a riff that soon chugs away before letting loose on the air-raid-like guitar effects. If this doesn’t interest you, I don’t know what will.
This all comes together to create a party-rock anthem vibes, which in comparison to the rest of their discography, is comparable to songs such as BEAST and THE OUTRAGE SEXUALITY. There is one reoccurring feature here and that is the powerful gang vocals which are always crucial to the song’s development.
Additional ornaments keep everything fresh and interesting with a bass slap included for good measure and altered vocals made to sound like a stuttering two-way radio.
Not only does the song slightly deviate away from their current sound, the music video is also in the same boat.
The camera often pans and goes out of focus while switching between various shots and angles within seconds. There is also use of fast and slow motion alongside the integration of moving images. It makes for a disorientating high-octane experience but a pleasurable one at that.
CREATURE is so full of energy and doesn’t fail to impress with its range of ideas both audibly and visually. That signature sinister sound still creeps in but there is something different here that makes it unrecognisable. Definitely listen to this whether you’re a new or old fan because regardless, you’ll be in for a treat!
The last one is THE WHIRL and as longtime fans may notice, this is another song from their indies era getting the re-recording treatment, which lynch. has a history of doing. This follows suit from their previous singles such as EVOKE and ETERNITY that had DOZE and ALIEN TUNE respectively.
A horror-filled crescendo of violins screeches in before hearing the heavily processed and clean production of the bands current sound. Everything, in general, is a lot sharper and in-your-face and that’s a critique not only for this song but a lot of their other rerecorded ones as well. This may take some time getting used to if you’ve been listening to lynch. for a while now as it feels overdone in older songs.
There is definitely more of an industrial feel to the sound effects though and that’s where such an idea really shines. Things to note is the additional guitar part at the beginning and the deeper vocals during the screaming which is a lot more noticeable now.
What makes this track-listing unique is that songs BLØOD and CREATURE feed into the title of the single, BLØOD THIRSTY CREATURE. The second track, CREATURE, is the main feature as it is accompanied by a music video but also bring a new energy to lynch.. Then last of all, an older song, THE WHIRL, all in capslock, is re-imagined for not only long-time listeners but for new fans as well. This is somewhat perfect and makes up for the fragmented disappointment that was the SINNERS-EP so it’ll be interesting to see where they’ll go from here.
