toco toco ep.14 Rui Hashimoto, photographer

Hashimoto Rui, the official live photographer for many famous Japanese rock bands, takes us on a tour of one of their favourite place. In this episode, he takes us to Le Déco gallery in Shibuya. He is the photographer for bands: One Ok Rock, 9mm Parabellum Bullet, The HiatusNothing’s carved in stone to The Back Horn.

The Le Déco gallery building was constructed in 1964 for the Olympics and it’s quite rare to have one gallery take up a whole building, from ground to the fifth floor. Hashimoto Rui is exhibiting on three floors for the SOUND SHOOTER exhibition.

On one floor he is exhibiting landscape photos taken on a traditional film camera. The photos Rui Hashimoto took was of when he was travelling roughly six years ago. He travelled across Europe, America, to places such as Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, but also London and New York. He would use to walk around town for up to eight hours a day, taking pictures in the streets. During that time, he often listened to Straightener.

Hashimoto Rui shows us the second floor of his exhibition.

The blank walls of the show really gives off the gig vibes.

The second floor of the SOUND SHOOTER exhibition has all its walls painted in black, which is rare in Japan, to give it the atmosphere of a live house. In this room, he showcases 12 bands he is following, some of those we mentioned above.

Finally, he takes us up to the third floor of the show where there are clips to documentations on magazines and leaflets. There are also merchandise such as his clothing brand “Stingray” which features his polkadot designs for visitors to purchase.

It’s nice to have the opportunity to see the artists who work around the Jrock bands we know and love, so check this guy out on his website for more of his work. Special thanks to toco toco tv for this tour with him.
