Like our staff member Shmilly I would also like to round off the year by looking back at the releases from the precious year of 2014. I will however keep it short and dense compiling down everything into one single post. Make sure to read Shmilly’s follow ups where new top lists will be revealed!

It might also be worth pointing out that the genres between my top (album) picks varies quite a lot. You can see more info on each release by clicking the titles.

Top 5 Albums

#5. Crystal Lake – Cubes
Excellent metalcore that sucks you in by its heavy rhythms!

#4. amazarashi – Yuhi Shinko Higashizumu
Tender yet powerful vocals, accompanied with some unique instrumentals to brightens those gloomy days.

#3. WagakkiBand – Vocalo Zanmai
The best Vocaloid songs arranged in traditional Japanese instruments by a hand full of skilled veteran musicians!

#2. Aimer – Dare ka, Umi wo. EP
An album filled with emotions where the focus lies on Aimer’s outstanding vocals. Overall the album might sound dark, but the lyrics are surprisingly optimistic even though it might seem a little depressing at first.

#1. Girugamesh – Gravitation
The new sound of Girugamesh tops my album list despite all the controversy. Gravitation brings a balance between progressive metal, electronics and pop, forming one awesome recipe to completely match my taste buds!

Top 5 Singles

#5. Jin – daze/days
Playful and catchy song with vocals provided by Maria from GARNiDELiA.

#4. Konomi Suzuki – This Game
A vigorous pop/rock song that beautifully make use of the piano and violin extensively!

#3. Aimer – broKen NIGHT/holLow wORlD
Double sided single broKen NIGHT/holLow wORlD, includes a total of four songs to exhibit Aimer’s vocal abilities in a variety of ways. From a sweet and reminiscing song (broKen NIGHT) to a powerful and rocking song (holLow wORlD).

#2. TK from Ling Tosite Sigure – Unravel
A very dynamic, energetic and emotional piece combined with one of the most unique voice out there! The lyrics reflects on the main character from the Tokyo Ghoul but can easily be interpret to reflect the real lives of many.

#1. EGOIST – Fallen
Fallen undoubtedly became this year’s top single for me, as I was instantly pulled in from the first listen! The song has some crazy sounding guitars along a “drum ‘n bass”-like sound to really pump up the chorus. Amazingly fierce and intense to summaries!
