On July 15, the new visual kei duo “yukigesyo_” (雪化粧) released their album Byakuya (白夜). Along with the new album, the music video for to the light came a day later, on July 16, showcasing a unique visual style blending organic and synthetic imagery.

yukigesyo_ features two very prominent figures within the Japanese music scene. First handling vocals, violin, guitar, and piano is Kanata Yumishiro (弓代星空), or as he’s known in this project, Hikarito (ヒカリト). Joining Hikarito is Magamaga CZQ (禍禍シズク), who most will recognize by the name Cazqui. Magamaga CZQ takes over the seven-string guitar along with beat-making and electronic manipulation. Together with their experience, yukigesyo_ demonstrates a virtuosic approach to blending classic and contemporary music.

A captivating atmosphere in the music video for to the light showcases a blend of wintry and electronic imagery. The combination of natural and synthetic elements is a key theme within yukigesyo_’s music. Hikarito’s angelic violin and piano textures are distorted and transformed by Magamaga CZQ’s sound manipulation. Serving as the first track to the album Byakuya, to the light features a little bit of everything: intense rock riffage, soft emotional passages, and turbulent electronic soundscapes.

The first album of yukigesyo_, Byakuya effortlessly demonstrates the wealth of experience within each member. The mix of classical and rock influences with heavily processed sound design creates a unique style difficult to find anywhere else. Byakuya features a total of 12 tracks, each showcasing a profound unity of each member’s creative talents. Soft acoustic layers merge effortlessly with the archaic electronic textures supported by the raging distorted guitars. Compared to previous works of both musicians, Byakuya emphasizes electronic music, while the rock elements fill out and populate the surreal worlds created in each track. Byakuya is the latest evolution of both Hikarito and Magamaga CZQ’s creative work and demonstrates a completely new sound with equally as much emotion.

Also featured on Byakuya is a new version of VIOLIA originally released under Magamaga CZQ’s name with Kanata Yumishiro as a feature. The new version, “VIOLIA (mode:yukigesyo_)”, updates the original with an updated production style to blend in with other tracks on the album as well as enhance the electronic elements. The origins of VIOLIA can be heard straight away, being one of the more rock-centric tracks of the album. Meet the members of yukigesyo_

Hikarito has demonstrated a wealth of musical expertise. One impressive example of this is the band AIOLIN. Much like yukigesyo_ , while in AIOLIN, Hikarito handled no shortage of work, taking over vocals, violin, guitar, and piano in addition to composing all music.

From the very beginning, Hikarito has blended classical and band music together to create unique textures. Hikarito has also been involved in various projects under the name Kanata Yumishiro. AURORIZE is a noteworthy example; the track METEOR, which features Cazqui, showcases how effortlessly he can add classical influences to other genres.

Kanata Yumishiro also had a duo project before the formation of yukigesyo_ called VIEWON, where he teamed up with KAZAMI, drummer of the band DaizyStripper to present another take on the combination of classical and rock music. Kanata Yumishiro has also been immensely successful as a solo artist, where he leans more into his classical training, which has led to many opportunities, most notably a performance for the Emperor of Japan.

Most recognizable under the name Cazqui, Magamaga CZQ’s career has been equally as monumental as his new partner. In direct contrast to Kanata Yumishiro, Magamaga CZQ’s experience lies within the metal world. As a former guitarist of NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST, he has established himself as a masterful guitar player. He has also released a handful of solo works under both names, Magamaga CZQ and Cazqui. In recent years he has been collaborating with many notable musicians within visual kei as part of the project Cazqui’s Brutal Orchestra.
