PassCode releases their first single, Freely, with the addition of new member Emily Arima from the on-hiatus group LADYBABY. Notably, the new song out on November 10 is already on streaming platforms along with its respective music video. Even with the line-up change, PassCode’s signature style of kawaii metal and high-speed riffs continues.
Indeed, the music video directed by Takaya Ohata captures a glimpse of a Tokyo nightlife after-hours, complete with unsavory characters in a bar brawl, coins flying out of casino game machines, and partygoers dancing until the sun comes up. For sure, the intensity of the visuals matches beautifully with the energy of the track.
While the rhythmic beat remains constant in the song, key changes have a sonic jolt like heavy turbulence on a jet plane. But, this chaotic ride maintains flight on the strength of the vocals, marvelously balancing Emily’s growls with the harmony from vocalists Nao, Kaede, and Hinako. Also, the new release contains FLAVOR OF BLUE which continues the energy and heavy beats from the lead single.
This comes as a pleasant surprise for fans of both PassCode and LADYBABY, especially since LADYBABY went on hiatus in early 2020. Now with Emily’s involvement in the group, they can continue to have the growls that are characteristic of their powerful songs. Most likely, she will be able to handle the harsh vocals of their earlier works when performing them live.
