POLKADOT STINGRAY’s second EP Sekirara was released on May 26, which they followed up with their hope-filled music video for the first track Aoi. Building on that hype, they also revealed the music video for the fourth track Diver.
Diver also serves as the theme song for RAGE Shadowverse Pro League 21-22, the professional Japanese esports league for Shadowverse, a strategic multiplayer digital card game.
The band took into account when creating the music video that a videogame such as Shadowverse allows for different tactics and playstyles depending on the opponent or situation. These tactics become apparent when the band is interrupted from performing the rapid and upbeat song, before getting into a massive fight with their shadowy alter egos. It’s here that each member showcases their succinct fighting styles that might be adopted when playing Shadowverse.
Starting with knocking down the boxes, dangerous items fly at vocalist and guitarist Shizuku from off-screen. Luckily, her quick reflexes allow her to react accordingly, spraying the culprit in a black liquid.
She soon reveals that each band member has an alter ego who has their own way of fighting, triggering an all-out brawl. From this point onwards, it becomes a CGI-filled spectacle full of fighting choreography—mainly from Shizuku’s angle.
The standout feature of the song is the unexpected tempo change introducing a dark and gloomy electronic dance beat with a dissonant sounding guitar. In contrast, the fuzzy and warm tone of the guitar during the chorus puts the energy of the song at an all-time high.
Shadowverse, the strategic multiplayer digital card game, is developed and published by Cygames, the creators of mobile games Granblue Fantasy and Uma Musume, and was released on iOS and Android devices on June 17, 2016, and macOS and Windows on October 28, 2016.
