DIR EN GREY’s 29th single Ningen wo Kaburu (人間を被る) artwork has been revealed, centring around a naked mother and child on a dining table. The single is due out on April 25 in a variety of editions, each with three songs—Ningen wo Kaburu, Ash, and a live version of Utafumi (詩踏み) from Zepp Tokyo on October 12, 2017.

DIR EN GREY has also released a new band photo to accompany the announcement which has baffled some fans, thanks to Kyo’s alternative direction in clothing. “Once again, Kyo and Toshiya both manage to confuse me with their outfits” and “Can we talk about this photo please?” were some comments on the official Facebook post. I too was confused at first but quickly realised this is the essence of being a pioneering visual artist. To push artistic boundaries, you must try something outside of the norm, so I say power to Kyo and I hope he continues down this adventurous fashion route.
The new look for the whole band, on the whole, is a mismatch of assorted styles leaving just the lighting and photography to tie them all together. This may potentially be intentional as a clue for a narrative for Ningen wo Kaburu, but this could just be wishful thinking on my part as a long-time DIR EN GREY follower. For now, let’s wait and see how this all plays out.
