The latest single, Lemon, by Kenshi Yonezu, named after sour citrus, have been stirring up sharp and bitter feelings since it’s release yesterday, on March 14. The music video, which has been cropped into a square, observes a somber group of people sat in a circle of chairs in a dimly lit hall. In this Alcoholic Anonymous setting, people come together to speak their minds and reach out for help, which brings us to the theme of the song of someone who feels burdened in life.
The video spends a lot of time focusing on small details like the flick of a heel as well as the gentle lighting of the characters in the video which emphasizes the stillness of the room and people.
As a dancer sways in solitude between the shots, Kenshi is sat on a bench with matching stilettos heels. The serious vibe of this video breaks away any humor tied into the unusual visual, and has us wondering what the intention and message behind it is. Reading into the lyrics, he sings, “How good it would have been if this were all just a dream, Even now, I still dream of you“, which leads us towards the feeling of saudade and longing.
The Lemon single release has three songs, but also has some unusual things included, the most interesting being the blue and yellow letter set in the “Lemon edition”. There’s a preview of the live performances included on the DVD of the limited editions of Lemon which you can check out here:
In related news, Japanese drama Unnatural (アンナチュラル) used Lemon for its theme song, which began broadcasting on TBS in January this year. The story takes place in a fictional research institution called UDI Lab which has been shortened from “Unnatural Death Investigation Laboratory”, lead by Satomi Ishihara (石原さとみ) who plays a pathologist, a scientist who studies the causes and effects of diseases.
