Anticipation continues to mount as we approach the release of Matenrou Opera’s (摩天楼オペラ) EP Chronos, on April 22! The music video for the lead track builds on the excitement with gorgeous visuals and its impressive heavy metal sound. If you feel like you can’t wait for its release then you’re in luck! Well, partially in luck at least. The song alone will get an early release ahead of the EP on April 15! Unfortunately, none of the band’s official sources say where it will be available. However, we presume, it will be through services such as iTunes or even Spotify.
Until then you can listen to the song in the music video that was directed by Takuya Oyama (THINGS.).
Matenrou Opera shine in all their glory on a darkened set illuminated by stage lights from above. It’s quite simplistic in its raw form, but post-production magic transformed it into an elegant visual work that matches the song very well. Symbolic imagery such as flowers surrounding the beautiful actress, the celestial body and an ox skull enhance the narrative of the song and adds more dynamic to the video.
It’s nothing too out of the ordinary for the band. In fact, it has more in common with what they were creating during the AVALON era when compared to their newer music videos. If you’re a longtime fan you’ll quickly notice the visual similarities between Chronos, Tonari ni Suwau Taiyo and Tengoku no Aru Basho.
Chronos begins with a lull that beautifully advances into the heart of the song ranging from heavy verses and an addictively upbeat chorus! The quintet embraces modern metal elements in Chronos which are most notable in Hibiki’s drumming pattern, JaY’s searing guitar solo and the slight, but noticeable differences in Sono’s powerful vocalization. These elements along with the structure of the composition present an unexpectedly fresh sound, but it’s a sound that’s entirely Matenrou Opera through and through!
