I can’t imagine there are many people in their early twenties that could manage—not only two massive one-man arena shows but also a performance at one of the UK’s most prestigious music festivals, all in three straight days. If the idea of working that hard made you break out in a sweat just thinking about it, imagine also putting on your first London headline show in three years just two days later.
When you’re a group like BABYMETAL, becoming metal legends by age 14–16, and on the cusp of your long-awaited comeback, you can pull off some pretty amazing things.
In 2016, BABYMETAL made history by being the first Japanese band to headline a show at Wembley Arena. Now in 2019, though it might be a downgrade, the group took to Brixton Academy to test both new music, and their fans’ devotion throughout the last three years.
Comprised of a near fifty-fifty split of new material and trademark tunes, the setlist included a yet-to-be-announced track as well as their new single PA PA YA!!. Despite only being released a day prior to the show, PA PA YA!! was given as much respect by the crowd as BABYMETAL’s older work and became one of the highlights of the night.
Ending the night in a fittingly metal way with a 20-minute rendition of THE ONE and Road of Resistance, the trio brandished BABYMETAL flags and prompted a wall of death in the center of the venue floor before the curtain fell. The night wrapped up with a trailer for their new album Metal Galaxy due for release this October, their first-ever US headline arena show and their massive 17-date European tour.
Though tonight’s show wasn’t their biggest or most extravagant UK performance, it served as a solid teaser for what’s to come, showcasing highlights from their upcoming LP, and leaving us wondering what to expect when they return for a full-fledged European tour.
New tracks went over well with the crowd, fitting in alongside already well-established material. Despite losing a member and being away from UK stages for three years, BABYMETAL proved that they are still on top form, and creating new music that can rival their already iconic discography.
